The Different Lead Abatement Processes
Lead abatement is a process that involves removing any elements that are lead-based from homes, businesses, resources, and other products throughout the world. The reason as to why lead abatement will need to occur is to reduce the amount of exposure to lead that people will experience from using lead-based products. There are three main processes that can be used to complete lead abatement: enclosure, removal/replacement, or encapsulation. Below we will expand on the steps associated with each process.
Enclosure
The simplest method of lead abatement is to get rid of the lead with the use of enclosure. In order to successfully enclose lead, all of the products containing this harmful element will be covered with paneling or gypsum board. With that being said, although enclosure is the easiest method, it may not be the best method for every lead abatement issue. In order for it to be extremely successful, enclosure should be used on large and flat surfaces.
Removal/Replacement
The removal/replacement process is incredibly useful but it is more time consuming than other methods of eliminating lead. In order to successfully remove/replace the lead from a resource, the product with the lead will be removed to an off-site location. It will then be recovered with a product that isn’t lead-based. The majority of the time that the removal/replacement process is used for lead abatement is during home renovations. As an example, if any window panes or doors are covered in lead based paint, they will be removed and replaced by non-lead based products.
Encapsulation
The final beneficial process that can be used as a method of lead abatement is encapsulation. The majority of companies may find this process to be the most advantageous as it is the least expensive option available for lead abatement. Unfortunately, it can also be the most ineffective process, depending on the situation. In order to use the encapsulation process, a product covered in a lead-based substance will then be coated with a special liquid. This liquid is essentially a sealant that helps to seal in the lead so that there is no physical exposure to the harmful chemical. With that being said, encapsulation cannot be used in areas with high friction due to the fact that the sealant will wear away over repetitive contact. Also, it can be rather inconvenient for areas that are exposed to an ample amount of weather, as the coating can also weather away over time.
